Syracuse University juniors Dina Eldawy and Crystal Letona have been named as 2018 recipients of the prestigious Truman Scholarship.
Eldawy of Pensacola, Florida, is an international relations and citizenship and civic engagement major in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and is a member of the Renée Crown University Honors Program. Letona of Los Angeles is a communications and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, a policy studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School and a women’s and gender studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Anish Shroff ’04 will be this year’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month commemorative lecturer. Shroff will give his lecture, “Ethnic Identity and the Power of Being Undefined,” in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons (114 Bird Library) on Friday, April 13, from 6-7:30 p.m. See SU News for more information.

On April 13, the Institute for Veterans and Military Families and the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs will present a special cinemas event as a part of the D’Aniello Speaker Series. Syracuse University continues to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Wednesday, a plaque honoring Dr. King was unveiled on the site where he spoke on campus in 1965. That was his second visit to campus, his first coming in 1961. Dean of Hendricks Chapel Brian E. Konkol presided over the program at the Shaffer Art Building, which featured remarks by Chancellor Kent Syverud and Special Assistant to the Chancellor Barry L. Wells. The plaque commemorates that July 15, 1965, visit and affirms Syracuse University’s commitment to foster and support a diverse, equitable and inclusive campus community. La Casita’s third annual “Diversity in Reading” campaign is underway. The monthlong campaign’s goal is to raise support for the bilingual library and dual language literacy programs at La Casita Cultural Center, 109 Otisco St., Syracuse.
More than 160 student volunteers and interns worked this year with La Casita, says Tere Paniagua ’82, executive director of the College of Arts and Sciences’ Office of Cultural Engagement for the Hispanic Community. That number increases by about 40 percent each year, she says.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting a series of events in April in collaboration with students, faculty and staff across campus.
The month-long celebration begins on April 1, with the kickoff event on Thursday, April 5, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in 500 Hall of Languages. Attendees will enjoy food, meet and mingle with students, faculty and staff, learn about the month’s events, view and discuss the documentary film “Vincent Who?,” and participate in the unveiling of this year’s Anti-Asian Hate Crime Exhibit.
