Hendricks Chapel, in partnership with Chancellor Kent Syverud and Dr. Ruth Chen, will host a plaque dedication and unveiling honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4—a day that also marks the 50^th anniversary of the civil rights leader’s assassination.

The program, which will take place in the Shaffer Art Building Galleria, pays tribute to Dr. King and to the July 15, 1965, visit he made to campus to speak on “The Role of Education in the Civil Rights Movement.” The plaque dedication will take place near the location where King spoke, at what was then Sims Dining Hall.

Syracuse Symposium continues its yearlong look at “Belonging” with a visit by renowned zine maker and librarian Jenna Freedman.

A member of Columbia University’s Barnard College, Freedman will headline a lecture and workshop collectively titled “Classification and Language(s) of Belonging,” April 5-6.

On April 5, Freedman will discuss “Zine Librarianship as Critical Practice” from 5:15-6:30 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons (114 Bird Library). Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services will be provided. The following day, she will present a workshop called “Seizing the Means of Publication: Zine Making” from 9 a.m. to noon in 002 Bird.

On March 21, third-year law student Cecilia Santostefano and second-year law student Katie Becker, representing the College of Law’s Wohl Family Veterans Legal Clinic (VLC), each argued a case before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Buffalo Regional Office’s Decision Review Officer (DRO).

April is Autism Awareness Month, and a group of students on campus are tackling what is meant by “autism awareness” and how that may differ from “acceptance,” hoping to bring the Syracuse University community to that point.

On Tuesday, April 10, from 5-6:30 p.m. in 228A Schine, a panel of  SU students will have a discussion moderated by Professor Christine Ashby, director of the Institute for Communication and Inclusion (ICI). The panel features five members of On The Spectrum (OTS), an organization designed by and for autistic SU community members.

The Norma Slepecky Memorial Lecture and Undergraduate Research Prize Award Ceremony will take place Wednesday, April 4, at 2:45 p.m. in 304 Schine Student Center. This is a change from the previously announced starting time of 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).

The University Lectures series is hosting Joy-Ann Reid, host of MSNBC’s “AM Joy” and columnist for The Daily Beast, on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel. Reid will be engaged in an on-stage conversation with Dean Lorraine Branham from the S.I. Members of the campus community are invited to attend a special plaque unveiling and dedication program honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at 4:30 p.m. on April 4, the 50^thanniversary of the civil rights leader’s assassination.

The brief program will take place in the Shaffer Art Building Galleria, near the location where Dr. King spoke during a 1965 visit to the Syracuse University campus. The plaque commemorates that July 15, 1965, visit and affirms Syracuse University’s commitment to foster and support a diverse, equitable and inclusive campus community.
