Take the Mic at the Verbal Blend Poetry Slam

Verbal Blend, a spoken-word poetry program within the Office of Multicultural Affairs, will host its annual Take the Mic Poetry Slam on Thursday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium, Newhouse 3. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The poetry slam is a competition that includes students from Syracuse University, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Le Moyne College and Onondaga Community College. Poets recite original material for up to three minutes. After two rounds, judges score poets on their originality, stage presence, content, delivery and time. Trophies are awarded to the first-, second- and third-place poets.

LGBT Resource Center Hosts 15th Annual Rainbow Banquet

The LGBT Resource Center will host its 15th annual Rainbow Banquet on Wednesday, April 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Goldstein Auditorium. Students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to celebrate the end of the academic year and recognize this year’s graduating class. An Evening of Poetry with Gabriel Ramirez

Acclaimed spoken-word poet Gabriel Ramirez comes to Syracuse for a public performance on affirmation as a form of resistance. The performance will be held at 7 p.m. April 19 in Maxwell Auditorium.

His work has been featured in Huffington Post, Vibe Magazine and at a TEDxYouth Conference. Ramirez uses powerful language to tackle controversial subjects such as white privilege and what it means to be Afro-Latino.

Maxwell Professor Mehrzad Boroujerdi Named a 2017-18 ACE Fellow

Mehrzad Boroujerdi, professor and chair of political science at the Maxwell School and a Provost Faculty Fellow for internationalization, has been named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for the 2017-18 academic year.

Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen colleges and universities by identifying and preparing faculty and staff for senior positions in higher education administration. Boroujerdi, who was nominated by Provost Michele Wheatly, was one of 46 Fellows to be selected for the 2017-18 cohort through an intensive nomination and application process. Read more at SU News.

‘Paving the Way’ Connects Alumni and Students for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

As part of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, members of the campus community are invited to an insightful discussion with Syracuse University alumni on Friday, April 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 500 of the Hall of Languages. University Celebrates Trans Week of Liberation

The LGBT Resource Center presents Trans Week of Liberation April 3 through April 7.  The week of events aims to affirm and celebrate trans communities and experiences.

The Trans Week of Liberation keynote event, #BlackExcellenceTour, is Thursday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in Life Sciences 001.  The keynote features CeCe McDonald and Joshua Allen, Black, trans feminine activists. Their talk will focus on intersectional racial and gender justice and their vision for radical social change, revolutionary love and liberation that centers those who are the most marginalized.  American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided.
