Professor Kanter, College of Law Students, Staff Contribute to SCOTUS Amicus Brief

Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Teaching Excellence in the College of Law Arlene Kanter, together with her research assistants, Alyssa Galea and Megan Brooks; students from her Fall 2016 Disability Law class, Cintia Garcia and Alexandra Caraballo; and the law library’s assistant director of student learning, Christine Demetros; contributed to an amicus brief filed in the Supreme Court of the U.S. case Endrew F. v. Amir Rahnamay-Azar Named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Syracuse University

Chancellor Kent Syverud today announced the appointment of Amir Rahnamay-Azar as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Syracuse University. Reporting to the Chancellor as a member of the executive team, he will direct the university’s finance and administration functions. Rahnamay-Azar’s appointment is effective Feb. 15 and is subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees. Read more at SU News.

Volunteers Sought for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the School of Social Work in Falk College, the Syracuse University community is invited to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service that will take place Monday, January 16, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Syracuse Model Neighborhood Association, 401 South Avenue. Assistance is needed to sort and pack boxes of clothing and to prepare sandwiches for delivery to the Samaritan Center. Drivers and vehicles are also needed to deliver food and clothing. ’10 Heralding Next Step in 3D Printing’s Evolution

For all its hype, 3D printing hasn’t exactly caught fire with consumers. Xiaofan Luo G’10, an alumnus of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, understands this perception and is confident that we are only now beginning to understand the true potential of this technology. His company, Polymaker, develops 3D printing materials that refine the process and prove that it can be a valuable, and widely used, tool for manufacturing. Read the full article at SU News.

Marsha Senior Appointed HEOP Director

Marsha C. Senior has been appointed director of the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and assistant director of Student Administrative Services at University College.

Senior has worked in higher education for over 30 years. Before joining Syracuse University in 1986, she was employed at Le Moyne College as a counselor with the Upward Bound Program. Prior to her recent appointment, Senior worked as an academic counselor in the Office of Supportive Services, providing comprehensive services to students through Student Support Services and HEOP.   Read more at SU News

Hosein Earns Prestigious DNI Grant

Assistant Professor Ian D. Hosein in the College of Engineering and Computer Science has been awarded a Doctoral New Investigator (DNI) Grant from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund. The DNI grant program promotes the careers of young faculty by supporting research of high scientific caliber and enhances the career opportunities of their undergraduate and graduate students through research experience. It is awarded to just 75 assistant professors across the United States each year. Read more at SU News.

Campus Community Members Soon Able to Designate Preferred Name on MySlice

Members of the Syracuse University community will soon be able to designate their preferred or chosen name on MySlice to indicate to others how they would like to be addressed. The new policy, which will be implemented at the start of the spring semester, will assist people who use a name other than an official legal name to self-identify. This new University policy is the result of student advocacy; concerns and suggestions to the Chancellor’s Workgroup on Diversity and Inclusion; the work of the units involved in the planning, including Information Technology Services, LGBT Resource Center, Office of Registrar and Office of Human Resources; and the help and support of various campus community members.
