Landscape of Urban Education Series to Kick Off Sept. 22 with Shawn Ginwright

The Douglas Biklen Landscape of Urban Education Lecture Series will start up for the year with a talk on Thursday, Sept. 22, by Shawn Ginwright, associate professor at San Franscisco State University. Ginwright will speak on “Radical Healing in Schools and Communities” at 5:30 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium. The series, which has been running since 2005, is dedicated to the presentation of current ideas and strategies for navigating urban education terrain in the United States, reflecting the School of Education’s long-running commitment to urban education. The late professor Sari Biklen was its initial organizer, and it was named for Dean Douglas Biklen after his retirement. Read more about the series at SU News.

Members of Congress, Victims’ Families Speak During Briefing on Capitol Hill Hosted by CCJI

On Sept. 12, The Cold Case Justice Initiative (CCJI) hosted a briefing on the Emmett Till Reauthorization Act of 2016 in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C. The event was sponsored by Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who, along with Sen. Richard Burr, is leading a bipartisan effort to pass the legislation. At this special event, Paula Johnson and Janis McDonald, professors of law and co-directors of CCJI, and members of a coalition pushing for reauthorization, came together to address the profound necessity for this effort. Nominations sought for Syracuse University Martin Luther King Jr. 2017 Celebration Unsung Heroes Awards

The Syracuse University Martin Luther King Jr. 2017 Celebration committee is seeking nominations for the Unsung Heroes Awards, which will be presented during the evening celebration in the Carrier Dome on Jan. 29, 2017. The awards are presented annually to people who, in the spirit of King’s “beloved community,” have made a positive difference in the lives of others, but who are not widely recognized for their efforts. To be eligible for this award, nominees should not have received widespread recognition or been previously honored for their efforts, and their work should be ongoing and outside their normal job/student expectations. NAACP Syracuse University Unit to Hold 2016 Town Hall Meeting Thursday

The Syracuse University unit of the NAACP announces its town hall meeting, which will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in Heroy Auditorium. The Town Hall Meeting is featured in NAACP Week, a weeklong celebration of the Syracuse University unit of the NAACP including fundraising, discussions, meetings and a march in partnership with two other campus organizations speaking out against police brutality. The Syracuse University unit of the NAACP is focused on shedding light on the injustices students of color on campus face, in addition to working on NAACP’s national goals. Read more at SU News.

Anthony Davis to Address Music, Social Justice Sept. 26

Composer and experimental pianist Anthony Davis will give a talk titled “Opera and Black Lives Matter: Music and Social Justice” on Monday, Sept. 26, in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons at Bird Library. The talk, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is part of the 2016 African American Studies Colloquium, sponsored by the College of Arts and Science’s Department of African American Studies and with additional support from the college’s Department of Art and Music Histories.
