Physicist Gabriela González G’95 Reveals How Syracuse Prepared Her to Make Science History

For Gabriela González G’95, life is a honeymoon—to quote a recent country hit. No sooner had the renowned physicist returned from her own honeymoon than she and her husband, fellow Argentinian theorist Jorge Pullin, moved the party to Syracuse in 1989. Swapping modest digs in Central Argentina for similar ones in Central New York, the newlyweds found themselves at the future epicenter of gravitational-wave astronomy.

Indigenous Filmmaker, VPA Faculty Member Scores Sundance Debut for Documentary on Native Author N. Scott Momaday

A documentary film on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning author N. Scott Momaday by Jeffrey Palmer, an assistant professor of film in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Department of Transmedia, will make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. “N. Scott Momaday: Words From A Bear,” an imaginative visual journey into the mind and soul of the Oklahoma-born Native American author and poet, will have its world premiere at the festival in Park City, Utah, in January.  Continue Reading

Jianshun Zhang Named IABP Chairman, Draws International Conference to Syracuse

Syracuse hosted the seventh International Building Physics Conference (IBPC2018) in September, gathering experts on the engineering, science and design of buildings from 33 countries. At the forefront of the three-day event was Jianshun “Jensen” Zhang, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Zhang was recently named the chairman of the board of the International Association of Building Physics, after being confirmed by members during the conference.

University Hosts Dec. 14 Program on Understanding Bias for All Staff

A national expert on diversity, inclusion and unconscious bias will speak Dec. 14 at the Schine Center’s Goldstein Auditorium in a program for all University staff. The program is jointly sponsored by Syracuse University Interim Chief Diversity Officer Keith Alford and the Office of Equal Opportunity, Inclusion and Resolution Services. Light refreshments and a welcome are scheduled for 8:15-8:45 a.m.; and the program will run from 9-10:30 a.m.

Fall Update 11.30.18

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I would like to open this correspondence by acknowledging November as Native Heritage Month. Let us not forget the struggles, sacrifices and contributions of indigenous peoples of this nation. To mark the culmination of Native Heritage Month, the Office of Multicultural Affairs will host a special event on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 5-8 p.m. in The Skybarn on South Campus. The event will feature a social dance and award ceremony. I welcome and encourage your attendance.
