Wynn Newhouse Awards Exhibition Now Open at Palitz Gallery

The ninth annual Wynn Newhouse Awards Exhibition runs through May 14 at Palitz Gallery, located in Syracuse University’s Lubin House at 11 East 61st St., New York City. The exhibition that was created to draw attention to the achievements of artists of excellence who have disabilities.

Verbal Blend Hosts Campuswide Student Poetry Slam

Verbal Blend, a spoken-word poetry program within the Office of Multicultural Affairs, will host its annual Take the Mic Poetry Slam on Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schine Underground of Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Speaks at Syracuse University

On Wednesday, April 6, Caryl M. Stern, president and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, visited campus.  Stern’s visit included a talk with a group of campus and community members, hosted by the Winnick Hillel Center for Jewish Life, about the importance of saving and protecting the world’s children. Stern also spent the next morning with a group of Maxwell School students with deep interest in the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s response to the Syria crisis.

Maxwell Model UN Team Awarded Top Honors at NYC Conference

For the third year in a row, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs received top honors for “Outstanding Delegation” at the annual Model UN Conference in New York City. The team, composed of 20 undergraduate students, won the top prize for its research and portrayal of the island nation of New Zealand, the country assigned by conference officials.

Symposium Speaker Will Address Diversity and Inclusion on University Campuses

Sunaina Maira of University of California-Davis will give a talk Thursday, March 24, titled “Inside/Outside: Decolonizing the Settler University.” The talk, which begins at 5 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium, is part of the College of Arts and Sciences’ Ray Smith Symposium. This year’s symposium theme is “The Future of Graduate Education in the Humanities.”

Sunaina Maira Sunaina Maira A professor of Asian American Studies at UC-Davis, Maira will talk about the issue of inclusion and exclusion on college and university campuses today. She will draw from a critique of the imperial university she developed with Piya Chatterjee in their edited book “The Imperial University: Academic Repression and Scholarly Dissent.”

La Casita Celebrates ‘Diversity in Reading’ in April

On Tuesday, April 5, La Casita will celebrate the publication of “What I Love About Me,” featuring the writing and photography of children enrolled in its Dual-Language Reading Circles program. The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at La Casita (109 Otisco St., Syracuse), features author readings, followed by a reception.

On Saturday, April 9, La Casita will present a multilingual open-mic night, marking the publication of another book, “MUSA,” at 8 p.m. in Panasci Lounge of the Schine Student Center.
