Celebrate International Women’s Month with Women’s Empowerment and Engagement Partnership March 8-10

The Syracuse Women’s Empowerment and Engagement Partnership (SWEEP) is a cross-campus collaboration that will be hosting several on campus events in celebration of Women’s History month in March. “Common and Diverse Ground: Raising Consciousnesses by Acknowledging the ‘Hidden’ Things that Divide Us” is the theme for Spring 2016’s Interfaith Dialogue Dinner Series. Himika Bhattacharya on “Love is love, how can it be divided?”: Women narrating joint/marriage, caste, and tribe in Lahaul, India.

In this talk, Bhattacharya will trace the marriage practice of “joint” in Lahaul, India. By juxtaposing oral histories of women in joint marriages with interviews conducted with government officers in the region, she will discuss the ways in which official discourses on marriage, love and sexuality serve as proxy for caste.
