Innovation Orange: Associate Professor Sydney Hutchinson

Sydney Hutchinson, associate professor of music history and cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences, conducts research in ethnomusicology, where music and culture intersect. Her passion lies in bringing this to her students both in class and through public programming, where she literally brings her lessons to life. One group of interest for Hutchinson is the music of the Karen, people who have relocated to Syracuse from Burma or Myanmar. Their song and dance brings great joy to people of the Karen culture, but also provides the ideal elements for rich and diverse research. In this edition of Innovation Orange, in which we highlight faculty research, Hutchinson tells us why ethnomusicology touches us all.
