This fall, the Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services Office is debuting a new SU I.D. card design. Behind the new design is a new system—one that allows University community members to choose to use their preferred name on their SU I.D.
The ability to use preferred names on SU I.D. cards comes after years of work by the Pronoun, Gender and Preferred Name Advisory Council (PGPNAC). The council, led by Jenny Gluck, associate chief information officer, and Jorge A. Castillo, director of the LBGT Resource Center, has been active since its inception in June 2018. It was formed in response to Long-Term Recommendation #32 from the March 11, 2016, Chancellor’s Workgroup on Diversity Inclusion Final Report. The report affirmed that the University, “Expand (its) Preferred Name/MySlice process for choice of gender pronouns, email display names, ID cards, and issues related to Blackboard and other relevant platforms.”
Composed of University leaders representing various departments, organizations and bodies, the PGPNAC has worked both internally and with various groups over the last two years to enhance inclusiveness of trans and gender-nonconforming individuals.
One of the council’s accomplishments was rolling out a new version of MySlice/PeopleSoft (Campus Solutions 9.2) that has enabled campus community members to select from a set of pronoun options (including no pronouns) which, by departmental request, could be pulled into various systems used on campus. To date, 872 students, faculty and staff have added pronouns, and 2,384 have added a preferred name. All SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry students requesting a preferred name have been converted in Syracuse University systems.
“We are thrilled to see the ability to add preferred name to one’s SU I.D. card brought to fruition, as there has been great desire for this feature expressed by students, faculty and staff alike,” says Gluck. “We believe it will send a powerful message to our constituents that gender identity is not only respected but truly embraced at Syracuse University.”
This fall, the newly redesigned cards were distributed to all incoming students and new faculty and staff members. Returning students who would like a new card can fill out the I.D. card services form to request a replacement ID. A $25 replacement fee will be charged to your student account.
Students, faculty and staff can indicate their preferred name and pronouns by logging into MySlice, navigating to My Profile, and then to Personal Details.
